About The Hill Cottage - The Story

The HillStaying in the Cottage

The Hill Cottage was converted from a stone farm building in 1990. The back door opens into the old farm yard (now only used for the owner’s Connemara ponies).

The cottage has French doors on the South side opening onto a patio and a private garden with a beautiful view across the countryside to Slieve Croob Mountain in the distance. Walk to the top of the hill and enjoy views as far as the Mourne Mountains, the Ards Peninsular and the Cave Hill.

Severable years ago we won A Farming Conservation Award.

We (Kelsie and David, the owners) live in the old stone built farm house (pictured right) now a “listed” building. We try our best to make all our guests welcome and ensure that they have an enjoyable stay with us.

Relax in the peace and quiet in the garden, spend an evening browsing through the books, or play a game in front of the log fire.

We are delighted to have children coming and recently have created up to 1 km of woodland walks and green lane paths round the farm and down to our river for guests to enjoy. We have joined with the RSPB to encourage wildlife on the farm and as part of this endeavour we have an acre of wild bird cover and a wildflower meadow. We are making a wild life pond and planting native wetland plants also primroses, bluebells and other wild flowers. Last year we won a Farming Life Conservation Award for our work.

The cottage lies between the two villages of Crossgar and Killyleagh, between the two villages there is a good local butcher, greengrocer, small supermarket, chemist and post office, not to mention a wine store and off licence. Downpatrick 7 miles away has Asda and Lidls so shopping is not a problem. There is even a fish and chip or Chinese carry out!

However if you fancy going out for an evening meal try The Dufferin Arms situated in the shadow of the fairy tale Killyleagh Castle (originally 400 years old and still lived in today) or The Smugglers Table also in Killyleagh .

Half an hour will take you into Belfast, an excellent place to shop.
If you like touring around we are only a couple of hours drive on good roads to places like The Giants Causeway, Marble Arch Caves in Fermanagh or even Dublin city.

We are always delighted to lend you maps and have a good range of leaflets on places to visit.

We are registered as Family, Walker, Cyclist, Golfer and Dog Welcome by NITB and we hold a Gold Green Tourism Award.

We do hope you will enjoy your holiday at The Hill Cottage.
